Less than one hour away by train from Nagoya, Gamagori was founded in 1954. Member of the Network, this partnership symbolizes an audacious desire to discover another culture.

If the relations between Europe and Japan began with the Silk Road, they have greatly evolved over the last years. Japanese culture changed from the country's original culture to its contemporary culture, which combines influences from Asia, Europe and North America. An hour away by train from Nagoya, Gamagori is surrounded by the scenic Milkawa Bay, which benefits from a mild climate and a beautiful scenery, the sea being its most important resource.
The Gamagori section of the Mikawa Port has been undergoing development to become an international trading base in the Chubu district. Economically, the city is closely linked to Toyota firm. It is also an important resort centre, and is famous for its pleasant beaches.
  • More than 6 million people visit Gamagori for sightseeing, fishing and shell-fish gathering, and more than one million tourists stay in Japanese style hotels every year. A new marine project was under construction "Laguna Island Gamagori" to develop resort hotels, yacht harbor, villa and amusement park by the sea. The place is also famous for its Fireworks Festival on the last Sunday of July.
  • Gamagori port is very active: cargos mainly import timber and building material (plywood) from Malaisia, America, New-Zeland and Indonesia, and export a great number of cars from Toyota plants. After the new port facilities were completed, ocean-going cargos have increased year by year. Gamagori port is also transforming into a multi-purpose international port which will contribute to sustainable development of the region.
Gamagori Marine Development is an important organization which follows research programs in the fields of biotechnologies, marine technology, environment and renewable energies.
Gamagori is also famous for its fish market, its mandarin oranges production and rope manufacture.
