Seven thousand kilometres away from the French metropolitan coastline, lies a beautiful “butterfly” named Karukéra. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, La Guadeloupe belongs to the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles. Nestled between La Dominique and Montserrat, la Guadeloupe is made of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated by a channel called La Rivière Salée and a vast mangrove.swamp. La Grande-Terre lies on a wide limestone plateau and offers beautiful beaches and a magnificent landscape. Quite different, La Basse-Terre is located on a volcanic range, dominated by La Soufrière, a volcano1467 metres high.
Nertheless, La Guadeloupe is above all an archipelago made of Marie-Galante, les Saintes, la Désirade et Petite-Terre, called “Southern Islands” whereas Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy are called the “Northern Islands”.
